Where Are Genmoji Saved on iPhone? How to Find, Reuse, and Delete Them

Where Genmoji are saved on iPhone and how to find, reuse, and delete them

You made a Genmoji last week, it was exactly right, and now you cannot find it. It is not in the emoji grid between the faces and the flags, and searching the keyboard for the words you typed brings up nothing useful. Genmoji are kept, but not where emoji live. This guide shows where every Genmoji you create is saved, how to use one again in two taps, how to keep a Genmoji someone sent you, and how to delete or reorder the ones that are cluttering the list.

The short version

Where a new Genmoji goes

When you create a Genmoji and tap Add, two things happen. It is inserted into the message you are writing, and it is saved to your sticker collection, the same place that holds stickers you lifted from photos and any Live Stickers you made.

There are two doors to that collection:

Both show the same list, newest first. If stickers are missing from the keyboard, check that Stickers is turned on in Settings, General, Keyboard.

The collection syncs through iCloud, so a Genmoji made on the iPhone also shows up in the sticker section on an iPad or Mac signed in to the same account.

How to use a saved Genmoji again

  1. Open the emoji keyboard and go to the sticker section.
  2. Tap the Genmoji. In Messages it lands inline, at text size, and you can keep typing around it.
  3. To use it as a reaction, touch and hold a message bubble and choose it from the Tapback options.
  4. To place it on top of a message as a sticker, drag it from the sticker section onto the bubble.

Outside Messages the same Genmoji is treated as a sticker or an image. What that looks like in WhatsApp is covered in how to use Genmoji in WhatsApp, and for friends on other phones in can Android users see Genmoji.

How to save a Genmoji someone sent you

A Genmoji in a conversation can be added to your own collection.

  1. In Messages, touch and hold the message that contains the Genmoji.
  2. Tap Emoji Details.
  3. Tap the option to add it to your stickers.

The same screen shows the description the sender typed, which is useful when you want to make something similar. If the Genmoji arrived as a sticker on a bubble, touch and hold it and look for Sticker Details instead.

How to delete a Genmoji

  1. Open the sticker section, from the emoji keyboard or from the plus button in Messages.
  2. Touch and hold the Genmoji you no longer want.
  3. Tap Remove.

It disappears from the list on this iPhone and, through iCloud, from your other devices. Three things to know:

To reorder instead of deleting, touch and hold any sticker, tap Rearrange, drag the favorites to the front, and tap an empty area to finish.

Can you edit a Genmoji after saving it?

No. A saved Genmoji is a finished picture. To change the hair color, the expression, or the hat, create a new one and adjust the description, then remove the old version. Small wording changes produce noticeably different results, so it often takes a few tries.

Do saved Genmoji take up storage?

Barely. Each one is a small image. Hundreds of them add up to less than a single photo, so there is no storage reason to clear them out. Tidying is about finding the good ones quickly. The large storage item connected to Genmoji is the Apple Intelligence download itself, which is covered in Genmoji stuck on downloading support.

When one long list stops working: packs

The sticker section is a single row with no folders, no names, and no search. That is fine for twenty stickers and awkward for two hundred, and it only exists on iPhones that can create Genmoji in the first place. Which models those are is listed in how to get Genmoji on iPhone.

Pixmoji organizes custom emoji the other way round, in packs. It works on any iPhone with iOS 15 or later.

  1. Create with Text to Emoji, by describing what you want, or with Image to Emoji, starting from a photo.
  2. Tap Add to Pack to file the result in a pack, for example one for the family chat and one for work.
  3. Tap Install Pack to put the pack into WhatsApp's sticker tab. The Explore tab has ready-made packs to add as well.

How the two approaches compare is in Genmoji vs custom emoji apps.
