How to get Genmoji on iPhone, why it is missing, and what works on older iPhones

Genmoji is Apple's way of making a new emoji from a few words, right in the emoji keyboard. If you have heard about it and cannot find the button, the reason is almost always one of four things: the iPhone model, Apple Intelligence being switched off or still downloading, a language setting, or a Screen Time restriction. This guide checks each of them in order, shows where the button is once it works, and covers the honest answer for iPhones that cannot run Genmoji at all, which is most iPhones in use today.

The short version

Check 1: is your iPhone supported?

Genmoji is part of Apple Intelligence, and Apple Intelligence runs on the device, so it needs recent chips and more memory. Supported iPhones:

The regular iPhone 15 and 15 Plus, iPhone 14, and anything older do not support Genmoji, and a software update will not change that. To see your model, open Settings, General, About and look at Model Name.

Check 2: is Apple Intelligence on and finished downloading?

  1. Open Settings, Apple Intelligence and Siri.
  2. Turn on Apple Intelligence.
  3. If it says it is downloading or preparing, leave the iPhone on Wi-Fi and plugged in. The models are large, and the Genmoji button only appears when they are ready.
  4. Keep roughly 7 GB of free storage. If the phone is nearly full, the download waits. Freeing up iPhone storage is its own job.

Also make sure iOS is up to date in Settings, General, Software Update. Genmoji arrived in iOS 18.2 and gained new ways to create in iOS 27.

Check 3: language and region

Apple Intelligence works in a growing list of languages. If your iPhone language or your Siri language is not one of them, the Apple Intelligence switch is missing or greyed out. The fix is to set the iPhone language in Settings, General, Language and Region and the Siri language in Settings, Apple Intelligence and Siri to the same supported language. Apple Intelligence is also not offered in every country, so the Apple Account region can matter.

Check 4: Screen Time restrictions

On a child's iPhone, or any phone with Screen Time limits, image creation can be switched off. Open Settings, Screen Time, Content and Privacy Restrictions and look for the Intelligence and Siri options, where image creation can be allowed or blocked. If a parent or a work profile manages the phone, they have to change it.

Where the Genmoji button is

  1. Open any app with a keyboard, such as Messages.
  2. Tap the emoji key.
  3. Type a description in the emoji search field, for example "raccoon wearing headphones", and tap Create New Emoji. Or tap the Genmoji button at the top right of the emoji keyboard.
  4. Swipe through the suggestions, pick one, and tap Add. It is inserted and saved to your stickers.

What Genmoji does not do, even when it works

No Genmoji? Custom emoji on any iPhone

If your iPhone is not on the list, you can still make your own emoji. Apple's built-in options on older phones are Memoji (an avatar built from menus) and, on iOS 17 and later, Live Stickers cut out of photos. For an emoji drawn from a description, the way Genmoji works, you need an app.

Why don't I have Genmoji on my iPhone?

Usually because the iPhone is not an iPhone 15 Pro or newer, Apple Intelligence is off or still downloading, the iPhone or Siri language is not supported, or Screen Time blocks image creation.

Which iPhones can use Genmoji?

iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and every iPhone from the 16 lineup onward, with Apple Intelligence turned on.

Can I get Genmoji on iPhone 14 or iPhone 15?

No. Genmoji needs Apple Intelligence, which is not available on the regular iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, or older models. An emoji maker app is the alternative on those phones.
