Genmoji Stuck on "Downloading Support for Genmoji"? How to Finish the Download

Genmoji stuck on Downloading support for Genmoji on iPhone, and how to finish the download

You open the emoji keyboard on a new iPhone, tap the Genmoji button, and instead of a text field you get a message: "Downloading support for Genmoji. Once downloaded, iPhone will be able to create an emoji for you." An hour later it says the same thing. The next morning too. There is no progress bar, no cancel button, and no Genmoji in the App Store to download by hand. The message is not an error. It means the iPhone is still fetching the Apple Intelligence models that draw Genmoji, and that download has conditions it does not tell you about. This guide explains what is being downloaded, how to let it finish, the fixes when it is truly stuck, and how to make a custom emoji in the meantime.

The short version

What "Downloading support for Genmoji" means

Genmoji are drawn on the iPhone itself by Apple Intelligence. The models that do the drawing are several gigabytes, too large to ship inside every iOS update, so the phone downloads them after you turn Apple Intelligence on. Until they arrive, features that depend on them show a waiting message. Image Playground shows the same kind of message for the same reason.

The download runs in the background and is polite to a fault. It waits for Wi-Fi. It slows down or pauses on battery. It steps aside while the phone is busy with other things, and a new iPhone is very busy for its first day: restoring apps, downloading the photo library, indexing. That is why the message is so common right after setting up a new phone, and why it so often clears by itself overnight.

Step 1: Make sure the iPhone can run Genmoji

The message only appears on supported iPhones, but it is worth ten seconds to confirm. Genmoji needs an iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, or any model from the iPhone 16 lineup onward. On an older phone there is nothing to download; how to get Genmoji on iPhone lists the models and the other reasons the button can be missing.

Step 2: Give the download the right conditions

  1. Open Settings, then Apple Intelligence and Siri, and make sure Apple Intelligence is turned on. The screen shows a note while the models are downloading.
  2. Connect to Wi-Fi. A home network is better than a hotel or office network, which may block large downloads.
  3. Plug the iPhone into power.
  4. Turn off Low Power Mode in Settings, Battery.
  5. Turn off Low Data Mode: Settings, Wi-Fi, tap the info button next to your network.
  6. Lock the phone and leave it alone, ideally overnight.

On good Wi-Fi the download often finishes within an hour. On a new phone that is still restoring from iCloud it can take until the next day.

Step 3: Check the storage

Apple Intelligence needs about 7 GB free. If the iPhone is close to full, the download waits without saying so. Open Settings, General, iPhone Storage and look at the bar at the top. If there is less than 7 GB free, clear some space first; large videos and duplicate photos are the quickest wins, and this iPhone storage guide goes through them in order. The download resumes once there is room.

Step 4: If it is still stuck the next day

Work down this list, and give the phone an hour on Wi-Fi and power after each step before trying the next.

FixHowWhy it helps
Restart the iPhoneHold the side button and a volume button, slide to power off, turn it back onRestarts a stalled background download
Update iOSSettings, General, Software UpdateApple has fixed download bugs on new models in updates before
Match the languagesSettings, General, Language and Region, and the Language setting in Apple Intelligence and SiriThe models only download for a supported language, and both settings must agree
Turn Apple Intelligence off and onSettings, Apple Intelligence and Siri. Switch it off, restart, switch it onStarts the download from scratch
Turn off VPNSettings, VPNSome VPNs and content filters block the download servers
Try another Wi-Fi networkA different home network or a personal hotspot from another phoneRules out a router or firewall problem

If none of these work on a brand-new model, the cause may be on Apple's side. When the iPhone 17 lineup launched, some phones could not download Apple Intelligence at all until Apple fixed it. In that case keep iOS up to date and contact Apple Support, who can confirm whether there is a known issue for your model.

How to tell when it is done

There is no notification. Open any app with a keyboard, tap the emoji key, and tap the Genmoji button at the top right, or type a description in the emoji search field and tap Create New Emoji. If you get a text field instead of the waiting message, the download is finished. What you can do next, including starting from a photo or an existing emoji in iOS 27, is in how to use Genmoji in iOS 27.

Make a custom emoji while you wait

If the chat cannot wait for a download, or the iPhone is one of the many that cannot run Apple Intelligence, you can still make an emoji from a description. Pixmoji works on any iPhone with iOS 15 or later and does not depend on Apple Intelligence.

  1. Open Pixmoji and tap the plus button to open the Create Emoji sheet.
  2. Choose Text to Emoji and describe the emoji, with the style in the same sentence: "raccoon wearing headphones, cute style".
  3. Generate. If it is close but not right, change a word and generate again.
  4. Copy or save the result. It appears with your stickers in the emoji keyboard and in Messages. To use a set in WhatsApp, tap Add to Pack, then Install Pack.

Describe the emoji in words, the same way Genmoji works, on any iPhone.

The result can be copied, saved, shared, or added to a pack.

There is also a difference in what you get. Genmoji are drawn in Apple's emoji look and live in the keyboard; Pixmoji takes any style you can describe and installs sets as WhatsApp sticker packs. The two are compared in Genmoji vs custom emoji apps, and where custom stickers show up in the keyboard is covered in can you add custom emoji to the iPhone keyboard.

Quick answers

How do I download Genmoji on iPhone?

There is nothing to download by hand. Turn on Apple Intelligence in Settings, Apple Intelligence and Siri, then leave the iPhone on Wi-Fi and power. The Genmoji button in the emoji keyboard works once the models have finished downloading.

Why does my iPhone say "Downloading support for Genmoji"?

The Apple Intelligence models that create Genmoji are still downloading. They are several gigabytes and download in the background, mostly on Wi-Fi and power, so the message can stay for hours on a new or busy iPhone.

How long does the Genmoji download take?

Apple gives no figure. On fast Wi-Fi with the phone plugged in, often under an hour. On a new iPhone that is still restoring apps and photos, it can take overnight.

Why is Genmoji stuck on downloading?

The usual causes are no Wi-Fi, Low Power Mode or Low Data Mode, less than about 7 GB of free storage, or a language mismatch between the iPhone and Siri. Fix those, restart, and leave the phone plugged in on Wi-Fi.

How much storage does Genmoji need?

Genmoji is part of Apple Intelligence, which needs about 7 GB of free space for its models.

Can I download Genmoji from the App Store?

No. Genmoji is a built-in feature, not an app. Emoji maker apps in the App Store, such as Pixmoji, are separate and work without Apple Intelligence.

Can I make Genmoji while it is downloading?

No, the button only works when the download is complete. In the meantime, an emoji maker app can create a custom emoji sticker from a description on any iPhone.

One night on the charger, usually

Wi-Fi, power, free space, matching languages, and a little patience finish the download in almost every case. For the emoji you need today, and for iPhones that will never get Genmoji, download Pixmoji, free to download for iOS 15 and later, and describe your first one.
