Genmoji vs Custom Emoji Apps: What Apple's Built-in Tool Can and Cannot Do
Genmoji is Apple's answer to "the emoji I want does not exist": type a description in the emoji keyboard and Apple Intelligence draws one. It is well made, it is free, and for a lot of people it is the right tool. It also has hard limits: which iPhones can run it, what it can draw, where the result can go, and whether you can start from a photo. This guide is an honest comparison between Genmoji and a custom emoji and sticker maker like Pixmoji, so you know which one to reach for, and when the answer is both.
The short version
- Genmoji needs an iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 16, or newer with Apple Intelligence turned on. It generates from text in Apple's emoji style, lives in the keyboard, and sends as a sticker in Messages.
- Pixmoji runs on any iPhone with iOS 15 or later. It generates from text or from a photo, in any look you describe, saves stickers into packs, and installs them into WhatsApp as well as iMessage.
- Rule of thumb: Genmoji for a one-off emoji inside Messages on a new iPhone. Pixmoji for a photo, a selfie, a specific style, a WhatsApp pack, or any iPhone older than the 15 Pro.
What Genmoji is
Genmoji arrived with iOS 18.1 as part of Apple Intelligence. In any text field, open the emoji keyboard, type a description in the search box, and tap the option to create a new emoji. Apple Intelligence generates a few candidates in the standard Apple emoji look. You can also make one from a person in your Photos library. The result behaves like a sticker: in Messages it appears inline at emoji size, and it can be used as a Tapback. It is genuinely convenient because it never leaves the keyboard.
Who can use Genmoji
This is the first and biggest difference. Apple Intelligence requires the A17 Pro chip or newer, so Genmoji works on the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max, the entire iPhone 16 line, and later models, with iOS 18.1 or newer and Apple Intelligence enabled in Settings. It does not appear on the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus, any iPhone 14 or 13, or the iPhone SE. That is a large share of iPhones in use. It is also limited to the languages and regions Apple has rolled Apple Intelligence out to. Pixmoji runs on any iPhone or iPad with iOS 15 or later, so the first question is simply which phone is in your hand.
What each one can draw
- Style. Genmoji draws in Apple's emoji style, deliberately, so results match the built-in set. There is no way to ask for anime, a flat cartoon, a chibi sticker, or a watercolor look. In Pixmoji the look is part of your words: "sleepy cat, anime style" and "sleepy cat, cute chibi" give two different stickers. See which style words to use.
- From a photo. Genmoji can base an emoji on a person from your Photos library, in the Apple style. Pixmoji's Image to Emoji takes any photo, a pet, an object, a selfie, a friend, and redraws it as an illustrated sticker with the background removed. More in turning a photo into a sticker.
- Content limits. Genmoji declines some subjects, including many real people and brands, by design. Pixmoji is more permissive with everyday subjects, and still leaves the judgment about whose face becomes a sticker to you.
- Sets. Genmoji makes one emoji at a time with no notion of a pack. Pixmoji groups stickers into packs, which is what makes a set of eight reactions in one look practical.
Where the result can go
Genmoji is at home in Messages: inline, Tapbacks, the sticker drawer. Outside Apple's apps it is sent as an image, and in WhatsApp it arrives as a picture rather than a sticker. Pixmoji stickers go into the iMessage sticker drawer through the sticker integration, install into WhatsApp as a proper pack with Add to Pack and Install Pack, and share to Instagram Stories, TikTok, and Snapchat as images. If your group chats live in WhatsApp, this is the deciding difference; see making custom WhatsApp stickers.

When Genmoji is the better choice
- You have a supported iPhone and you want one emoji, right now, inside Messages.
- You want the result to match Apple's emoji look exactly.
- You only ever chat in iMessage.
When Pixmoji is the better choice
- Your iPhone is a 15, 14, 13, or SE, and the Genmoji option simply is not there.
- You want to start from a photo of your dog, your coffee, or your friend, not just a text description.
- You want a specific look, or a matching set of eight reactions in that look.
- Your group chats are on WhatsApp and you want a real sticker pack, not images.
Plenty of people use both: Genmoji for the quick inline one-off in Messages, Pixmoji for the pack that lives in WhatsApp and the emoji made from an actual photo. They do not conflict.
Quick answers
Which iPhones support Genmoji?
iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max, all iPhone 16 models, and newer, running iOS 18.1 or later with Apple Intelligence enabled. iPhone 15, 14, 13, and SE do not support it. Pixmoji works on any iPhone with iOS 15 or later.
Can Genmoji make an emoji from a photo?
It can base an emoji on a person from your Photos library, in Apple's emoji style. For any photo, including pets and objects, and for a drawn sticker in a chosen look, Pixmoji's Image to Emoji does that.
Can I use Genmoji in WhatsApp?
You can send it, but it arrives as an image rather than a sticker. Pixmoji stickers install into WhatsApp as a pack that shows in the sticker keyboard.
Does Genmoji have different art styles?
No. Genmoji stays in Apple's emoji style so results match the built-in set. In Pixmoji the look is set by the words you use, such as anime, cartoon, or cute chibi.
Is Pixmoji free?
Pixmoji is free to download on any iPhone or iPad with iOS 15 or later.
Make the emoji your phone cannot
If the Genmoji button is not on your keyboard, or you want a photo, a style, or a WhatsApp pack, the other door is open. Download Pixmoji, free to download, and make it on the iPhone you already have.
