Genmoji vs Custom Emoji Apps: What Apple's Built-in Tool Can and Cannot Do (iOS 27)

Genmoji is Apple's answer to "the emoji I want does not exist": describe it and Apple Intelligence draws one. It is well made, it is free, and iOS 27, released on September 14, 2026, made it noticeably better: it can now start from a photo or an existing emoji, you can ask for a drawing or sketch look, and you can refine a result by describing a change instead of starting over. It still has hard limits: which iPhones can run it, where the result can go, and the fact that it makes one emoji at a time. This guide is an honest comparison between Genmoji as it stands in iOS 27 and a custom emoji and sticker maker like Pixmoji, so you know which one to reach for, and when the answer is both.

The short version

• Genmoji needs an iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 16, or newer with Apple Intelligence turned on. Since iOS 27 it generates from text, an existing emoji, a photo, or a person, in Apple's 3D emoji look by default with drawing and sketch options, and it lives in the keyboard and Messages.
• Pixmoji runs on any iPhone with iOS 15 or later. It generates from text or from a photo, in any look you describe, saves stickers into packs, and installs them into WhatsApp as well as iMessage.
• Rule of thumb: Genmoji for a one-off emoji inside Messages on a supported iPhone. Pixmoji for a matching pack, a WhatsApp sticker pack, a look you describe in your own words, or any iPhone older than the 15 Pro.

What Genmoji is

Genmoji arrived with iOS 18.1 as part of Apple Intelligence. In any text field, open the emoji keyboard, type a description in the search box, and tap the option to create a new emoji. Apple Intelligence generates a few candidates in the standard Apple emoji look. The result behaves like a sticker: in Messages it appears inline at emoji size, and it can be used as a Tapback. It is genuinely convenient because it never leaves the keyboard.

What changed in iOS 27

iOS 27 rebuilt the Genmoji creator. Four things are new:

• More starting points. Besides a text description, you can start from an existing emoji, an image from Photos, or a person tagged in your library.
• Describe a change. Instead of regenerating from scratch, you tell it what to alter: "make the cat calico", "add a party hat". Each change builds on the previous result.
• Style requests. The default is still the 3D Apple emoji look, and you can now ask for something that looks like a drawing or a sketch.
• Faster and more consistent generation, with less battery use, by Apple's account.

These close two of the gaps this article used to list, and they are good changes. What they do not change: the phone it runs on, the one-at-a-time workflow, and where the result can go.

Who can use Genmoji

This is the first and biggest difference, and iOS 27 did not move it. Apple Intelligence requires the A17 Pro chip or newer, so Genmoji works on the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max, the entire iPhone 16 line, and later models, with Apple Intelligence enabled in Settings. It does not appear on the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus, any iPhone 14 or 13, or the iPhone SE. That is a large share of iPhones in use. It is also limited to the languages and regions Apple has rolled Apple Intelligence out to. What each one can draw

• Style. Genmoji draws in Apple's 3D emoji look by default so results match the built-in set, and since iOS 27 it accepts requests for a drawing or sketch look. • From a photo. Since iOS 27, Genmoji can start from an image in Photos or a tagged person, and then take changes by description. • Content limits. Genmoji declines some subjects, including many real people and brands, by design. Pixmoji is more permissive with everyday subjects, and still leaves the judgment about whose face becomes a sticker to you.

Where the result can go

Genmoji is at home in Messages: inline, Tapbacks, the sticker drawer. Outside Apple's apps it is sent as an image, and in WhatsApp it goes out as a single sticker, one at a time, not as a pack in the sticker tab. • You have a supported iPhone and you want one emoji, right now, inside Messages.
• You want the result to match Apple's emoji look exactly.
• You only ever chat in iMessage.

When Pixmoji is the better choice

• Your iPhone is a 15, 14, 13, or SE, and the Genmoji option simply is not there.
