How to Combine Two Emojis into One on iPhone (Genmoji Emoji Mixing)
A crying-laughing face wearing a cowboy hat. A cat that is also a slice of pizza. A heart on fire, but made of tacos. Mixing two emoji into one has been a favorite trick on other phones for years, and iPhone users kept asking where theirs was. On recent iOS versions it is built into Genmoji: you can add emoji to a Genmoji description and the iPhone blends them into a new one. This guide shows how, what makes a good mix, the limits, and how to get combined emoji on an iPhone that cannot run Genmoji.
The short version
- Combining emoji on iPhone happens in Genmoji. There is no separate mixing keyboard.
- How: open the emoji keyboard, tap the Genmoji button, add two emoji (and words if you like), and pick a result.
- It needs a recent iOS version and an iPhone with Apple Intelligence. On older systems Genmoji only takes a text description.
- Two emoji work best. Three or more muddle the result.
- Without Genmoji, describe the mix in words in an emoji maker app instead.
How to combine two emojis with Genmoji
- Open a conversation and tap the emoji key.
- Tap the Genmoji button at the top right of the emoji keyboard.
- In the description field, add the first emoji. You can type it from the emoji keyboard or pick it from the emoji options the creator shows.
- Add the second emoji. Add a few words too if you want to steer it, for example a ghost emoji plus a pumpkin emoji plus "cute".
- Swipe through the results and tap Add. The new emoji goes into your message and is saved with your stickers.
If the creator only accepts words on your iPhone, your iOS version predates emoji mixing. Describe the combination instead: "a cat shaped like a slice of pizza" gets close to the same result.
What makes a good mix
| Combination type | Example | Why it works |
|---|---|---|
| A face plus an accessory | Laughing face plus sunglasses | The expression stays readable |
| An animal plus an object | Cat plus pizza | Two clear shapes blend into one character |
| A symbol plus a material | Heart plus fire | Simple outline, strong color |
| A seasonal pair | Ghost plus pumpkin, turkey plus pie | Instantly readable in a holiday chat |
| Two faces | Crying plus laughing | Often ends up as one or the other; add a word like "mixed" |
- Keep it to two. Each extra emoji pulls the result in another direction, and at emoji size the details disappear.
- Use words for the relationship. "Cat wearing a pizza" and "cat made of pizza" give very different results from the same two emoji.
- Generate a few rounds. The same input gives new versions each time.
What it cannot do
- It does not create a real emoji. The result is a Genmoji, an image. Friends on Android or older iPhones receive a picture, not an emoji character. See can Android users see Genmoji.
- Some combinations are refused. Genmoji declines certain subjects, and some brand or celebrity references produce nothing.
- You cannot edit a result later. To change it, combine again with a different emoji or wording.
Mixed emoji are saved in the same place as every other Genmoji. Where Genmoji are saved on iPhone covers finding and deleting them, and they can be used as reactions on a message, see how to react with a Genmoji on iPhone.
Combining emoji without Genmoji
Genmoji runs only on iPhones that support Apple Intelligence; the full list and the checks are in how to get Genmoji on iPhone. On any other iPhone, the same idea works in words.
Pixmoji takes a description and returns an emoji-style sticker, on any iPhone with iOS 15 or later:
- Open Pixmoji and choose Text to Emoji.
- Describe the mix: "a cat made of pizza, emoji style", "a crying laughing face in a cowboy hat", "a heart on fire made of tacos".
- Keep the results you like with Add to Pack, and tap Install Pack to send the set to WhatsApp's sticker tab. They also appear with your stickers in Messages.
Because the result is a sticker, it looks the same for everyone in a WhatsApp group, Android phones included. More ideas for words that work are in text to emoji: create one from a word.
Quick answers
Can you combine emojis on iPhone?
Yes, on recent iOS versions with an iPhone that supports Apple Intelligence. Open the Genmoji button in the emoji keyboard, add two emoji to the description, and pick a result.
Is there an emoji mixing keyboard on iPhone?
Not as a separate keyboard. Mixing happens inside Genmoji. On iPhones without Genmoji, describe the combination in words in an emoji maker app.
Why can't I add emoji to my Genmoji description?
Your iOS version is older than the emoji mixing feature, or Genmoji is not available on your iPhone. Update iOS, or describe the combination in words.
How many emojis can I combine?
Two give the clearest result. More are possible but usually produce a muddled image at emoji size.
Do combined emojis work on Android?
They arrive as an image in a text message and as a sticker in WhatsApp. They do not appear as an emoji character.
Can I save a combined emoji?
Yes. Every Genmoji you add is saved with your stickers and can be reused from the sticker section of the emoji keyboard.
Two emoji, one new one
Open the Genmoji button, add two emoji, add a word for how they meet, and swipe until it is right. On an iPhone without Genmoji, download Pixmoji, free to download, describe the mix, and send it as a sticker everyone can see.
